Linux merilis kernel terbarunya, Linux 3.0 kini tersedia untuk masyarakat umum.
Pengumuman Linux 3.0 berasal dari pendiri Linus Torvalds sendiri ketika ia dikirim ke Mailing list Linux Kernel.
“As already mentioned several times, there are no special landmark features or incompatibilities related to the version number change, it’s simply a way to drop an inconvenient numbering system in honor of twenty years of Linux. In fact, the 3.0 merge window was calmer than most, and apart from some excitement from RCU I’d have called it really smooth.”
Selain perubahan skema penomoran, kernel ini mencakup dukungan alarm timer POSIX, just-in-time compiler untuk paket filter BPF, sebuah sendmmsg() baru, system call, soket ICMP, penggabungan driver backend Xen (menyelesaikan proses panjang mendapatkan dukungan Xen Dom0 ke dalam kernel), deskriptor namespace file, dan banyak lagi.
